Mirek Janatka

PhD cand.

Mirek Janatka has a solid foundation in engineering and design from his Mechanical Engineering undergraduate degree from Brunel University, where he found a passion for robotics and bespoke system research and development, incorporating both virtual and rapid prototyping using modern additive manufacturing and cross domain software techniques for both automated MRI manufacturing and physical human joint simulation. His Master's at Imperial College carved a niche in Medical Robotics and Image Guided Intervention, where he worked under Professor Daniel Elson, implementing structured light for automated surgical navigation and Augmented Reality for surgical guidance in Intuitive's DaVinci Surgical Robotic system using the DaVinci Research Kit. Additional work under Prof Elson involved the development of a stereo otoscope case adapted and accompanying software for the iPhone. He has continued this thread under Dr Danail Stoyanov for his PhD at UCL, where his interests lie within AR in both stereo-viewers and tablet interfaces for surgical intervention, as well as emerging computer vision methods, such as motion magnification, for visible light diagnostics and optomechanical design of next generation endoscopes.
